welcome back to mornings on 2. it's saturday, august 20th. we continue with our breaking news coverage in morning. we did learn about 90 minutes ago that the two uc berkeley graduates detained in iran have each within sentenced to eight years in prison. that's according to iran state television. josh fattal and shane bauer with charged with illegal entry and spying in july of 2009. they were arrested in july of 2009, hiking in iraq and say they got lost and accidentally crossed into iran. shourd was released last september because of medical reasons and did not return for the trial. here the breakdown of the sentence for bower and fattal. they are each receiving three years in prison for illegal entry into iran. and they are receiving another five years for spying for the united states. they now have 20 days to appeal that sentence. bower and fattal graduated from uc berkeley we're we find ali rasmus with live reaction.

ali. >> reporter: we're in downtown berkeley right across from the uc campus, and just about everyone here this morning says they're at least somewhat familiar with this case. everyone says they are shocked and surprised by this sentence that came down just this morning. as you mentioned, sorry if this is re hative, but josh fattal and shayne bower were each sentenced to five years for spying and three years for illegal entry. so that's eight years for each of them. we have video of the last court hearing that cameras were allowed into. this was from last month. this is two americans in the court hearing in iran last month. this has been a two-year ordeal for them. they were detained in july of 2009, accused of entering their country illegal and spying for the u.s. but the hikers say they accidentally crossed the border on a hike. iran released sarah shourd for medical reasons but the two men

remained in iranian prison since then. we spoke to a u.s. national security expert who says he thinks fattal and bower are being used by iran as political prawns. >> they're being used to try to leverage the united states. there are a lot of issues going on now between the united states and iran, such as iran's nuclear program. their involvement in iraq, they're providing weapons to some militias there and providing weapons to the taliban in afghanistan. they're very assertive in their foreign policy in that part of the world. there's a lot of trouble that iran is behind so i'm very concerned that these people once again have been drawn into this relations instead of being released. >> people we've talked to this morning again are surprised and disappointed by this sentencing. >> a lot of country lines aren't determined. and if you're accidentally in another country, it's unacceptable to have to go

what started as a fender- bender end with this tractor- trailer caring into a building killing one woman. it happened yesterday afternoon in new mexico. police say the tractor-trailer reportedly clipped a pickup truck, two broks up the road and then lost control. it crashed into the building which was full of employees. the driver and two other employees were taken to the hospital for critical injuries. kansas city's airport is back open after police and homeland security shut down a terminal last night. a dog sniffing dog thought it detected something suspicious at a atm machine.

we've learned about two hours ago that two uc berkeley graduates have been sentenced to eight years each. ali rasmus is live with more. >> reporter: we're in downtown berkeley, shane bower and josh fattal were graduates so was sarah shourd and just about everyone here this morning says they're by this sentencing. most of the people we talked to say they were expecting the two hikers has been released about. you this we were not they were sentenced each to eight years in prison, five years for spying each, and three years each for illegal entry. this is video of the two americans in a court hearing in iran just last month. this has been a two-year ordeal for them. they were detained by iranian authorities in july 2009. officials accuse them of entering their country illegally and spying for the u.s. butt hikers said they accidentally crassed the border while on a hike near the iraq-

iran border and they got lost, that's why they crossed over the iran released sarah shourd for medical reasons in september but the men remained in prison. the u.s. state department and u.n. leaders have asked iran to let the hikers go. this morning we spoke to a u.s. national security expert who says he thinks fattal and bower are being used by iran as political fawns. >> they're being used to try to leverage the united states. there are a lot of issues going on now between the united states and iran, such as iran's nuclear program. their involvement in iraq. >> some of the people we talked to this morning who have followed this case closely agree with that national security expert. >> just hikers without gps and the wrong place at the wrong time and it just -- iran probably just toying with relations, trying to get concessions otherwise. >> definitely affects how the american people see iran. and then they did release one

man. the car at the center of the casey anthony murder trial has been crushed at a florida junkyard. the car was destroyed sometime this week. the car was' key piece of evidence in the murder trial. prosecutors argued that she duct-taped her daughter to suv indicate her then bust the body in the trunk before disposing of it. she was acquitted in the death but found guilty of lying to law enforcement. the west memphis three are free this morning after pleading guilty to the murders of three boy scouts. in march of 1984 they were convicted of the murders. one man sentenced to death. baldwin and kelly were given life sentences. but last fall the arkansas supreme court ordered a new hearing for the three allowing the courts to consider allegations every juror misconduct and whether new dna evidence would uphold the convictions. yesterday the three men agreed to a legal maneuver that allows them to maintain their claims of innocence.
